SMS Consent Requirements for Candidates & Contacts

Created by Armaan Malik, Modified on Tue, 26 May at 5:42 PM by Armaan Malik

Overview

Before sending SMS messages through ATZ CRM, you must ensure that recipients have provided appropriate consent to receive text communications from your organization.

Obtaining consent is a critical part of SMS compliance and is required by mobile carriers, industry regulations, and messaging providers. Failure to obtain proper consent may result in message blocking, campaign suspension, carrier penalties, or legal liability.

This article explains what consent means, when it is required, and how your organization can collect and maintain compliant SMS permissions.

Gain Consent in ATZ CRM:

1. You can select Candidates/Contacts from the List Page and ask them for Consent via Email.

2. You can view a Candidate's or Contact's SMS consent status directly on their Detail Page when composing or sending an SMS.

ATZ CRM only allows SMS messages to be sent to recipients who have provided valid SMS consent. If SMS consent has not been recorded for a Candidate or Contact, the system will prevent the message from being sent until consent is obtained.

Why SMS Consent Matters

Text messaging is a highly personal communication channel. Unlike email, recipients expect greater control over who can contact them via SMS.

For this reason, businesses must obtain permission before sending text messages and must provide recipients with a clear way to opt out at any time.

Proper consent helps:

  • Improve message delivery rates
  • Reduce spam complaints
  • Maintain carrier compliance
  • Protect your business from legal risk
  • Build trust with candidates and customers

What Is SMS Consent?

SMS consent is a recipient's agreement to receive text messages from your organization.

Consent should be:

Clear

The recipient should understand that they are agreeing to receive SMS communications.

Voluntary

Recipients should not be automatically enrolled without their knowledge.

Specific

The purpose of the messages should be explained whenever possible.

Documented

You should maintain records showing how and when consent was obtained.

Managing Opt-Out Requests

Recipients must always be able to withdraw their consent.

When a recipient opts out:

  • Stop sending SMS communications promptly
  • Honor unsubscribe requests immediately
  • Maintain records of opt-out activity
  • Avoid re-subscribing individuals without new consent

Common opt-out keywords include:

  • STOP
  • UNSUBSCRIBE
  • CANCEL
  • END

Once the text receiver replies with STOP or similar opt-out messages, Twilio blocks them from their end:
